Serial numbers for standard stock

September 2003

One of the features of The Business Shopkeeper which is now incorporated into The Jewellery Shopkeeper is the recording and control of serial numbers.

To use

When describing or receiving standard stock, a question asks; "Serials:", answer Y(es. Then when receiving the items a data entry box will appear asking for the serial numbers. Press "Enter" after entering each one and use up-down arrows to edit or choose a blank line. It is best to use a bar code scanner for this. (The 32-bit version does not work as well as the DOS or Unix versions which are more automated.) When all the serial numbers have been entered press Escape and you will be asked if you are finished editing the numbers. Even though we call them serial numbers, any alphanumeric characters can be entered.

Whenever a serialized item is sold the computer will prompt the operator with a list of available serial numbers. Select the correct one using the up-down cursor keys and press Enter. The computer prints the number on the invoice an records it in the customer’s history as well as in the serial number data base.

Serial number data base

Get there via Inventory, File mantenance, serial Numbers.

In the serial number data base you can enter a serial number and see when and to whom it was sold, as well as when it was received and the salesman’s code. In the case of a Zipsale or a sale to the Cash Sale account, the customer’s name (if entered at time of sale) is recorded in the serial number file.

You can also add, list and delete records if required.

Applications

New abilities beg for uses, and we found one: Receive standard style watches into standard stock and enter their unique case numbers as the serial numbers.

Jewellers who also sell other goods, such as radios and cameras, will have the biggest benefit.
